Setiap dunia terdiri dari sekitar 20 level, namun tidak semua level dapat langsung dimainkan. Ada beberapa gerbang yang harus dibuka dengan menggunakan kunci. Kunci ini didapat dari bermain biasa, namun kemungkinan drop rate-nya cukup kecil sehingga Gamers mungkin harus mengulang beberapa level sampai mendapatkan kunci. Dalam 1 dunia terdapat sekitar 4 gerbang yang harus Gamers buka dengan kunci. Setiap gerbang harus dibuka dengan kunci sebanyak 4-6 kunci, jadi Gamers bisa bayangkan bahwa Plants vs Zombies 2 akan memaksa Gamers untuk sedikit melakukan grinding. Tapi tentu saja jika Gamers tidak suka grinding maka Gamers dapat membayar Rp. 19.000 untuk membuka gerbang secara instant. Setelah urusan gerbang selesai maka selanjutnya Gamers harus berurusan dengan bintang. Bintang diperlukan untuk bisa maju ke dunia selanjutnya. Jika Gamers menyelesaikan semua level sebanyak 1x maka bintang yang Gamers dapat tidak akan cukup untuk membawa Gamers ke dunia selanjutnya dan ini berarti Gamers harus mengulang beberapa level untuk mendapatkan bintang. Namun seiring Gamers mengulang sebuah level akan ada tantangan yang harus dipenuhi, misalkan jangan sampai kehilangan 1 plants. Jika gagal memenuhi tantangan ini maka tidak akan ada bintang walaupun Gamers berhasil mengalahkan levelnya. Untuk variasi gameplay Plants vs Zombies 2 menawarkan lebih banyak mode seperti mencocokkan tile yang dibawa oleh zombie atau Gamers akan diberikan sejumlah sun di awal dan harus membangun plants dengan budget yang terbatas. Selain itu ada sebuah mode baru dalam setiap world yang secara tidak langsung merupakan endless tower namun dengan sistem level progresif. Overall Plants vs Zombies 2 ini tidak terlalu berbeda jauh dengan seri sebelumnya. Namun kali ini Gamers harus melakukan grinding yang sebenarnya bukan hal buruk. Saya have fun dengan proses grindingnya walaupun terkadang sebuah level bisa cukup sulit dan membutuhkan 3-4 kali percobaan untuk menemukan penempatan plants yang tepat. Namun Gamers dengan jelas bisa melihat pergeseran dari sebuah game casual ke game yang sedikit mid-core.
